The Choctaw Nation stickball team, Tvshka Homma, advanced to the finals and defeated the Mississippi Warriors 3-2 in double elimination Sunday to become champions of the third annual Labor Day Festival Stickball Tournament. Tvshka Homma’s win over the Warriors, 6-1, in opening night action Friday is the first time an Oklahoma team has defeated a team from Mississippi.
Games between the two: Tvshka Homma defeated Okla Hannali Friday night and advanced to second round on Saturday. They won over a Mississippi team for the first time ever. Final score of the Saturday game was Tvshka Homma 6, Warriors 1.
On Sunday, following a children’s exhibition game at 7 p.m., and a women’s exhibition at 8 p.m., the two teams met again with the Mississippi Warriors dominating and scoring 4 to Tvshka Homma’s 0. Both with one loss, the teams played back-to-back on the last night of the double-elimination tournament. In the battle for the championship, the end of the first quarter had the two tied at 2-2 and the second and third quarters were scoreless. Tvshka Homma scored in the last quarter. Final was 3-2. MVP – Billy Eagle Road of Durant.
Other Oklahoma teams in the tournament included Okla Hannali and Mahlihoma. Note: Most of the players on the Tvshka Homma team are from southeastern Oklahoma. Practice fields are located in Tuskahoma, Broken Bow, Hugo, Idabel, Durant, Atoka, Antlers and Talihina.
