The Woodmen of The World were in Calera for September 11 this year. The fraternal organization donated a flag to the Calera Fire Department in honor of the 911 tragedy.

The Woodmen of the World donate a flag each year on 911 as well as several others throughout the year.

The organization has donated more than 4,000 flags just in memory of the events on September 11, 2001 to pay tribute to local heroes.

Calera Mayor Michael Hearon said, “We owe a debt of gratitude to those who serve and have served.”

He said that while it shouldn’t, sometimes it takes an event like 911 to bring patriotism to the forefront.

Hearon said he feels like the flag is the final stone of the Calera Fire Department’s building and that it will be displayed proudly to show the nation’s strength.

Representative Dustin Roberts was also at the event and spoke along the same lines.

“We are the world’s keeper,” said Roberts.

He said that “no matter how hard they punch us here at home we are still going to stand up.”

Roberts said it was the events that took place on September 11, 2001, that lead him to join the military.

Roberts took a moment to thank all the service men and women saying that it was truly an honor to be able to thank them on behalf of the U.S.

He said it is because of these people that he can sleep at night knowing he is safe at home.

Memorial services such as this are held each year to honor the civilians and service men and women who lost their lives during the 911 attacks on America and those who fought and continue to fight for the freedom and safety of the nation.
