Altus High Head Football Coach Chad Stone knew going into his team’s game with Lawton High it would be a tough fight. And it was. The Wolverines cruised to an easy 52-0 win over the Bulldogs here on Friday night.
What he didn’t count on was that his team would make it easier on the visitor with turnovers and penalties. The Bulldogs were plagued with mistake after mistake in the first half. They fumbled the opening kickoff and had a punt blocked which led to a touchdown.
Altus didn’t commit a penalty in last week’s game against Ike. But they had eight penalties in the first half alone and finished with 12 penalties in the game.
Altus had 56 yard touchdown run by quarterback Tanner Cross called back because of a illegal block penalty. They still drove down to the LHS three yard line where they had a second and goal. However, a false start penalty moved back to the eight and the Bulldogs could not punch it in.
LHS running back Michael Warren was all he was advertised to be. The 6-0 , 190 pounder rushed for 116 yards on 18 carries and scored 4 touchdowns. He also had a 56 yard touchdown run called back on a holding penalty. Warren did all of his damage in 2 1/2 quarters because LHS Coach Randy Breeze pulled his starters out of the game.
If you’re looking for a bright spot for the Bulldogs it came in the form of sophomore running back Taven Birdow. It was Birdow who won game rushing honors. He rushed 21 times for 136 yards, the third straight time he has gone over the century mark.
After the game, Stone gave credit to very good Lawton High team.
“They are really good,” Stone said. “There was a point and time they belonged on our schedule but they don’t belong on our schedule until we get this thing turned around. It’s good that we are not playing them next year. They are crawling with division one athletes. They have seven or eight kids and I’m not talking just about seniors that are division one type prospects. You can see there team speed and when you mix that with the size they have you can see they are really really, really good. And we don’t have confidence right now. We fumble the opening kickoff and gave them ball on the six yard line. Defense responds well and only gives up a field goal. We spotted them several of their touchdowns either through misalignment or just not filling where we’re supposed to.”
Bulldog notes: It was the last Altus-Lawton game at least for a while. The Bulldogs have dropped both Lawton High and Lawton Eisenhower from the schedule. They will play Elk City and Anadarko the next two year.
Altus will begin their district season next week at Chickasha.
