CLAYTON – The Calera Bulldogs are district champions of baseball after a trio of decisive victories over Clayton and Smithville.
Calera clinched the district championship with a 6-3 win over Smithville on Friday.
On Thursday, Clayton dispatched Smithville 14-1 in a game punctuated by Lucas Wright’s one-hit, 11 strikeout performance on the mound and a five-RBI afternoon for Caleb Phillips.
Phillips had a home run and a double in the game, and Connor Hamilton also had a double among his two hits and three RBIs. Josh Loper was 2-for-4, Shawn Harper went 2-for-3 and Jake Shires 2-for-2 in the game.
The Bulldogs then put up a 10-run first inning against host Clayton on their way to a 20-0 destruction of the host Bulldogs.
Jesse Collett and Shawn Harper took turns on the mound for Calera, with Harper issuing just two hits and two bases on balls in four-plus innings.
Riley Barton and Braxton Barton (five RBIs) both hit home runs for the Bulldogs. Dakota Hodge collected four RBIs and Jesse Collett had three hits and three RBIs.
In other baseball playoff action last week:
TUSHKA earned a trip to the Class A regionals by eliminating a pair of Choctaw County teams. The Tigers defeated Ft. Towson 19-4, then eliminated the host Soper Red Bears by scores of 12-1 and 10-0.
COLBERT won its district on Friday with a 10-1 victory over Chattanooga in a winner-take-all game held in Turner.
COLEMAN swept through its Class B district games by crossing the dish 54 times in three games. The Wildcats defeated Mill Creek 23-0 and 15-5 and sent the Wapanucka Indians packing in a 16-1 decision.
CANEY claimed a district crown with two victories over county rival Stringtown (14-0 and 9-1).
