Beginning Thursday, Oct. 3, Texoma Art Association, Red River Art Council, Durant Area Chamber of Commerce, Durant Young Professionals, Durant Main Street and Mix 96.1, will host “Art Walk Downtown Durant.” This event will take place the first Thursday of every month, 5-7 p.m. in downtown Durant. It will feature art and visual performers who will be located inside most of the downtown businesses.
Kathy Sturch, one of the many featured artist for the first Art Walk Downtown Durant, will be at the Hollow Tree from 5-7 p.m. Thursday.Sturch was a full-time mom until her youngest son entered high school. She then joined two other children as students at Southeastern Oklahoma University to complete a Masters of Art Education Degree. Since then she has taught art students of all ages both on the university level and in the private sector and has painted and exhibited her work throughout the Midwest. Kathy continues to maintain her painting studio in her home where she explores painting with watercolor, pastels, and graphite.

“Painting opens doors of discovery and allows me to see the unseen. I don’t think of myself as a Realist or an Expressionist but more of a Realistic Expressionist. Improving on the beauty of nature is beyond me. I leave that to the creator. But I do see myself as one who looks beyond the visual surface to the inner spirit and that’s what my paintings are all about. A moment in time … a stage set, eyes focused on the main actor, and the audience seeks to interpret the meaning of the scene.”

Kathy is a member of the Texoma Arts Association and is a registered Choctaw Indian Artist. She has won numerous awards and honors for her paintings including paintings selected for the USDA National Native American Poster Award for 2009 and 2012.
