Durant lets Chargers slip through fingers

DURANT - Close but no cigar.


Durant quarterback Zac Cater threw for 402 yards and 4 TDs, but the Lions couldn’t stop a powerful Tulsa Memorial Chargers running game that produced 601 yards and 6 TDs. Durant (1-5, 0-3) let a 26-19 halftime lead slip away and lost 48-38 on Friday night.


The Lions came out slinging the ball in the first quarter. On their second possession, Cater stepped back into the pocket and threw a deep bomb to Brandon Maynard down the sideline for 51-yard TD pass.


Then Durant recovered a fumble at the Tulsa 39-yard line and scored two plays later when Layton Tubbs punched in a rushing TD from the goal line. The touchdown was set up when Cater found Skye Lowe for 37-yard pass. Durant led 14-0.


The Chargers answered back with 33 seconds remaining in the first quarter on a 90-yard rushing TD. However, the Lions roared back with a quick score before time ran out. Cater found Tubbs on a short pass and he plowed through three Chargers for a 64-yard TD which gave the Lions a 20-7 led heading into the second quarter.


At the start of the second quarter, Tyler Stovall stepped in front of a Chargers pass for an INT at Tulsa’s 25-yard line. It took one pass play from Cater to Lowe, down the sideline for a TD. The Lions led 26-7.


On a 13-play drive, the Chargers came back with a 7-yard touchdown run that cut the lead to 26-13.


Durant was driving down the field and was on Tulsa’s 12-yard line when Cater threw an interception which killed a scoring drive.


Tulsa turned the turnover into points on an 80-yard rushing touchdown with 1:36 left in the the first half. The Lions led 26-19 at halftime.


In the opening minutes of the third quarter, the Chargers scored on a 61-yard rushing touchdown play and took a 27-26 lead.


Deep into the quarter, the Lions recaptured the lead after they put together a 9-play drive that ended on 5-yard rushing touchdown by Stovall. Headed into the fourth quarter, the Lions led 32-27.


Both teams would score quickly in the beginning minutes of the final frame of the game. The Chargers took a three point lead after 20-yard rushing touchdown, but the Lions took 38-35 lead after Cater hit Maynard for a 66-yard passing touchdown. That would also be the last time the Lions would score.


The Chargers kept pounding the ball with their running game and scored two more touchdowns to steal the game from the Lions, 48-38.


Durant Stat Leaders: QB Zac Cater 18-31, 402 yards, 4 TDs, WR Skye Lowe caught 8 passes for 133 yards and a TD, Brandon Maynard caught 4 passes for 132 yards and 2 TDs, Layton Tubbs reeled in 3 passes for 107 yards and a TD. RB Kooper Cavender rushed for 36 yards.


The Lions hit the road next Friday night to play tough district foe McAlester Buffaloes. The Buffaloes are 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in district play. McAlester rolled over Tulsa Hale on Friday night, 56-12.
