St. Johns member ordained

The Rev. James Blagg, Rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church announced that on Saturday, October 12, 2013, The Rev. Dr. Gloria Walters was ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Durant.


Presiding at the ordination was The Rt. Rev. Dr. Edward Konieczny, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma. The Very Rev. Kevin Martin, retired Dean of St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Dallas, served as preacher for the ordination service.


Gloria Walters received her B. Music from University of Houston; M. Behavioral Studies from Southeastern Oklahoma State University; Ph.D. in Special Education from Texas Woman’s University; and Master of Divinity from Southern Methodist University. In addition, she completed post-graduate studies in Theology at Oxford University, England.


Gloria Walters began in church ministry as an Episcopal music and worship leader at the local church level and later as part of an Episcopal Evangelistic ministry that traveled throughout the Diocese of Oklahoma and the Southeastern United States.


After receiving her Master of Divinity, the Rev. Gloria Walters, served as a United Methodist Pastor in the North Texas Conference.


She later began to travel throughout the United States, Canada, India, and Trinidad as a missionary/evangelist.


Gloria Walters is in the process to become a Bi-vocational Priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma.


Bi-vocational Priests often serve smaller congregations while maintaining another secular vocation. Dr. Walters, whose Ph.D. is in Special Education has served as a public school teacher, an Early Intervention Specialist, a college instructor, and an Educational Diagnostician for many years.


In that capacity, she evaluates students with learning problems and works with their families and schools to provide appropriate educational programming for the students. Currently, she is employed with Denison ISD.


St. John’s Episcopal Church is located at 515 W. Beech in Durant, Oklahoma. Regular Sunday Services are at 10:00 am and 5:30 pm.
