ACHILLE - Mayor Randy Howard announced his resignation on Monday, the same night that the council selected a new police chief.

It was not immediately known if Howard was resigning from the appointed mayor’s position or from the Board of Trustees altogether. A special meeting was set for 7 p.m. Thursday for the trustees to appoint a new mayor and vice mayor.

Last week, the trustees named Arnold Medler as a new appointee to the board.

On Monday, the trustees voted to hire Randy Smith as chief of Achille Police Department.

Smith is enrolled in Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) and will be going in January for his law enforcement certification. One of the reasons given for the demotion of the previous chief was that she did not obtain her CLEET certification in a timely manner.

The trustees will meet in closed session on Thursday to discuss Smith’s pay rate as well as Howard’s resignation and appointment of a new mayor.
