The Rock Creek Lady Mustangs are coming off a 14-14 season last year. But head coach Clyde Young has a young team hungry to improve. Losing two seniors and one returning senior, Lady Mustangs will have some growing pains as this young team finds its way.
Everyone looks at the offense to spark a team, but Young is putting in a defense to spark the offense.
“We think our half-court defense will able to stop a lot of people. That’s probably the strength of the team. We’re able to defend and we’re able to do it well. We can match up with anyone,” said Young. “We run a lot stuff on defense so that we can get steals or turnovers, that we can turn into fast breaks. We like to mix it up on defense, we will run man-to-man and zone defense.”
Defense can keep a team in the game when the offense is struggling and according to coach Young, the offense is where improvement is needed.
“On offense, we like to set it up. We’re not very deep on the roster. So we have to set up our offense and run it. We struggle right now to make good shots, layup and free throws. So we have work to do,” said Young.
So with a defensive mind-set, coach Young foresees a season to look forward to.
“I’m looking forward to this year, we are young. I have only two girls that were starters from last year. But I’m looking forward to it and we’ll fight through inexperience.”
