Southeastern spotted East Central the first 11 points before taking command to shoot past the Tigers 78-68 in a rivalry-fueled conference match on Wednesday.

The Savage Storm ladies shot 50 percent from behind the arc (10-for-20) with three each from Kaylie Baxter and Cheree Kiser. SE retook the lead midway through the first half for a 37-29 lead at the break.

“ECU came in and hit some shots early, and we were standing around,” said Southeastern Basketball Coach Darin Grover. “Shots are going to come and go, but at least we had the whole game to get back into it.”

Baxter recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds on 3-for-3 shooting from downtown (5-for-8 overall and 3-for-4 at the line). Kiser finished with 15.

Haley Schaefer and Emily Williams added 12 points each for the Savage Storm, and they combined for 14 rebounds. Taylor Richards and Natalie Ruud scored eight each for SE, Madison Thames had four and Shelby Hill three.

Ronay English had four assists and four rebounds on a scoreless night for the senior guard.

As a team SE shot 26-58 (44.8 percent) to ECU’s 28-75 (37.3 percent). The Savage Storm got to the line often, hitting 16 of 20 free throws for an 80 percent mark to just 4-for-9 shooting (44.4 percent) for the Tigers.

The victory snaps a three-game skid for Southeastern and helps hold down second place in the Great American Conference with 10 games left on the schedule. SE is now 9-6 on the season and 6-3 in the GAC; East Central drops to 10-6 and 5-5.

The Storm ladies will hit the hardwood at 2 p.m. Sunday in Bloomer Sullivan Arena against Arkansas Tech (8-6, 4-4).
