Durant seniors sizzle on Senior Night against Ada

DURANT - The Durant Lions faced-off against their nemesis the Ada Cougars on Senior Night and rolled to a 52-46 victory. The Lady Lions didn’t fair as well as the fell to the Lady Cougars 57-31.

Boys game:

The Lions have put together back-to-back wins and raised their record to 8-10 on the season and are ranked at No. 19 in the OSSAA class 5A rankings. While Ada falls to 11-8 and are ranked in class 4A at No. 16.

Seniors Will Engle and Zac Cater combined for 27 points on the night. Engle had 14 points and Cater had 13 points. Senior James Donelean had eight points and four blocks. Senior Landry Wright pitched in four points.

The Lions are getting hot at the end of the season as they gear up to make a deep playoff run. Durant has a tough three game road schedule to close out the regular season with McAlester, Chickasha and Duncan on the docket.

It was tight in the first period as the Lions had a one point edge over Ada 14-13. Then in the second period Durant took over.

Durant’s defense came up big in the second frame of the game. Donelean’s presence in the paint kept Ada from getting drives to basket, while the Lions offense begun to heat up. Ada could only mustard five points in the period as the Lions put up 12 points and led 26-18 at halftime.

Ada begun to rally in the third period and drew within four points of Durant. The Lions held on to a 36-32 lead headed into the fourth period.

Ada hung with Durant in the fourth period. With only three minutes left in the game the Lions were up 45-43. But the Ada shooters went cold and only scored three points the rest of the away as the Engle and Donelean put the game away at the free throw line.

The Lions hit the road to play McAlester on February 11th.

Girls game:

It seemed only fitting that senior Rheagan Jones led the Lady Lions with 12 points on Senior Night, as Jones is the lone senior on this young team.

The Lady Lions continue to struggle on the offensive side of ball. But these ladies are fighters until the very end of each game.

It was cold shooting for both Durant and the Lady Cougars in the first period as the Ada grabbed a 7-4 lead to headed into the second period.

The Lady Cougars came on strong in the second period and the built a 10 point halftime lead over the Lady Lions 20-10.

In third period, the Lady Lions came got hot as they scored 17 points. Alexa Richards hit two big three pointers in the period, but Durant’s defense couldn’t stop the Lady Cougars and trailed 38-27.

Then in the fourth period Ada closed the door on a Lady Lion come back as Durant could only score four points and the Lady Cougars cruised to a 57-31 win.

Richards had eight points and teammate Ciera Taylor pitched in seven points.
