Trooper Steve Nabors Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troop E Durant

July 3, 2014

Summer is officially here and the Independence Day holiday is near. When school is dismissed for summer break, Oklahoma Highway Patrol expects more people to be out and about.

That certainly has been the case, according to troopers, and there have been several incidents that have resulted in fatalities and injuries. The first was a teen swimming with friends in the Willafa Woods area of Lake Texoma.

With the lake being low, they ventured out where normally no one would be unless in a boat. One teen was unable to make it back and his body was recovered by the Marine Enforcement Division several days later in about seven feet of water.

Since that tragedy, OHP has investigated two single-vehicle collisions that have resulted in the death of one young man and a collision that injured six young people the next day. Both vehicles were equipped with seat belts but none were in use.

All the investigating troopers believe the death and serious injuries sustained could have been prevented if seat belts had been used. OHP has no tolerance when it comes to enforcement of seat-belt and child-restraint use. Troopers ask for everyone’s help with this endeavor because it could cost more than a fine; it could cost a life.
