Local athletes make OCA All-State team

July 27, 2014

Three Bryan County baseball standouts will play in the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State game next week.

Silo grads Lance House and Leonard Sandler and Calera alum Caleb Phillips — along with Tushka’s Jaeson Nutt — are set to take the field for the Small East team at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the J.L. Johnson Stadium on the Oral Roberts University campus in Tulsa.

House, who suited up as No. 11 for the Rebels, is an outfielder.

Sandler, No. 3 in his Silo uniform, is an infielder.

Phillips was the Bulldogs’ No. 4 and the first baseman.

Nutt, No. 17 for the Tigers, is one of three pitchers on the Small East roster.

All these guys joined forces in May at the 42nd annual Kiamichi All-Star Classic at Eastern Oklahoma State College to help the South team beat the North 10-3.

Of course, that wasn’t the case last October, when Silo pulled out a win in a nail-biter to end Tushka’s fall baseball season in the Class 2A State quarterfinals. The spring state championship featured Silo, Calera and Tushka, but the Bulldogs’ and Tigers’ first-round exits eliminated any chance of another Texoma-area showdown.

Ranked third in the fall, the Rebels’ record ended at 29-5 with a 4-5 loss to Binger-Oney in the state championship. In the spring, Silo was ranked No. 1 with a 34-2 record but suffered an 8-7, state-final loss to No. 2 Dale in two extra innings.

Calera sat at No. 12 in the fall and closed out that season with 21-9 record in the second game of regionals. The Bulldogs bowed out last spring with a 25-6 record on a 9-0 loss to Mangum in the state quarterfinal. It was a history-making season as Calera baseball’s first trip to the state tournament, coinciding with the school’s inaugural appearance in the slow-pitch softball state playoffs.

Tushka’s fall 2013 turn stopped at a No. 11 ranking on a 25-9 record. In the spring, the No. 3 Tigers finished at 29-6 after a 5-1 state quarterfinal loss to No. 7 Hennessey.
