It’s become as much of a back to school tradition as in-service days and 100-degree temperatures: The annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon held by First United Methodist Church.

An estimated 180 educators and school staff attended the Wednesday event, held at the church in downtown Durant. This was the 17th year of the event, which has become locally famous for its healthy menu of salads and lighter fare.

“We have a wonderful group of teachers and support staff in Durant,” said luncheon organizer Arnold Walker. “Let’s hope we continue to give them the support they so richly deserve.”

Walker gave credit to the church Missions Committee for making the luncheon possible. Classes started Thursday in Durant schools.
