From student to colleague – education comes full circle at NWH
Northwest Heights Elementary School welcomes six new teachers as well as a new principal this year, along with a very unusual teaching team in third grade.
Mrs. Elaine Sawyers welcomes Mr. Taylor Downs to the third grade team after having him as a student in her classroom in 1999, and then again as a student teacher in the spring of 2012. This will be Downs’ second year as an educator. Mrs. Melissa Phelps also joins the third grade with 22 years of teaching experience. Mrs. Phelps is the daughter of long-time DISD faculty members, Gary and Patsy Dominick.
Mrs. Abbi El-katib will serve as a kindergarten teacher this year. She has one previous year of experience in an international school in Richardson, Texas. Mrs. Cristal Green, speech pathologist, was with the Calera ISD before joining the NWH staff. The second grade team welcomes Mrs. Cindy Cook who has been serving the district at Robert E. Lee for the past 12 years as a second grade teacher. Mrs. Nancy Breon returns to Northwest Heights, after teaching music in Madill last year.
Mrs. Valerie Crabtree was named as principal in June, after serving as assistant principal at Washington Irving last year. Prior to that, she served DISD as a teacher in first, second, and fifth grade for ten years.
