Man nearly drowns at Blue River Bridge

BOKCHITO - A leisurely afternoon at the Blue River Bridge nearly turned tragic on Friday when a man almost drowned.
Several youths from Bokchito happened upon the scene at a popular swimming spot on the Blue River south of the town. Derrek Cheek, 16, saw a man lying down who had turned purple and those with the man were trying to assist.
“He was lying in the water,” Cheek said. “They dragged him up the bank with a rope.”
East Bryan County EMS and Bokchito Fire Department responded to the scene, and deputies from Bryan County Sheriff’s Office soon arrived.
The man was transported to a local hospital but his condition or identity were not available as of Saturday afternoon. Deputies said he was expected to survive, and alcohol may have played a factor in the incident.
Five other people at the scene who were associated with the victim were arrested on suspicion of public intoxication. A dog was with the group, and people at the scene assisted by taking the dog back to family members of those arrested.
Logan Turnbow, 15, described the location - beneath a bridge over the Blue River - as a popular location for recreation.
“Everyone comes down here to swim,” Turnbow said. Rough trails lead from the paved road to a sandy bank above the river, littered Friday with beer cans and a fire pit.
