Bryan County first responders received an appreciation dinner and donation Tuesday evening. A Franks for Firefighters dinner was organized to thank the fire departments and present them with collected water and Gatorade.
The Woodmen of the World with the help of local businesses, donated more than 157 cases of water and more than 51 cases of Gatorade to the 18 local fire departments and to local Emergency Management.
“Out in a hundred degree weather in a fire, you get dehydrated real quick,” said Freeny Valley firefighter Don Singleton.
He said this donation will help the fire departments greatly. Greg Hagood of the Yuba Fire Department said, “I’ve got maybe four cases [of water] right now.” He added that it will be two weeks before he can order more water.
Woodmen of the World Chapter President Nancy Thrasher said the group wanted to show support for their local fire departments.
“We appreciate what they’re doing for us,” said Thrasher, and they wanted to let them know. Several firefighters at the event said they are thankful for this event and for the quarter-cent sales tax that supports local fire departments, a majority of which are volunteer.
They said that the tax provides the much-needed funds to run the departments, and donations such as this take the pressure off purchasing the needed water.
