CALERA – A 21-year-old Texas man has been arrested in connection with last week’s traffic accident which left another Texas family shattered.

Jesus Garcia, Jr., of Mesquite, Texas, was arrested Friday after he came to Calera Police Department for an investigative interview about the accident. He was booked into Bryan County Jail and is awaiting a Tuesday arraignment on felony charges of first degree manslaughter and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Calera police are also seeking a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving against Garcia, who sustained a minor injury in the accident.

The accident took place on Aug. 25 and took the life of 13-year-old Skyla Fisher of Arlington. Her mother, 33-year-old Kelly Spielman died Sunday morning, Calera Police said Tuesday.

Spielman’s six-year-old son Riley is in serious but stable condition at Children’s Hospital in Dallas.

Calera police and Oklahoma Highway Patrol conducted an accident reconstruction on Thursday evening at US 69/75 and North McKinley Street, where the crash occurred.

“We determined he was at highway speeds and in the turning lane” when the impact occurred, said CPD Captain Daniel Thurman. “We took blood from the driver and we are awaiting those results.”

CPD Chief Don Hyde said Garcia admitted to smoking marijuana on the day before the accident, and an undisclosed amount of the drug was found in the truck following execution of a search warrant.

“(Garcia) was taken into custody at the conclusion of the interview,” Hyde said. “All the evidence at the scene led us to a conversation with District Attorney Emily Redman.”

According to police, Garcia and a passenger were southbound in a pickup truck and had just left Choctaw Casino and Resort. Spielman, her children and three dogs had just left a Durant veterinary clinic. Two of the dogs died as a result of the accident.

For unknown reasons, Spielman’s small sedan had made a U-turn and was then turning left onto North McKinley, possibly en route to a store or restaurant. Police say the impact occurred just beyond the turn lane of the intersection.
