Altus Times publisher Denny Koenders, and KEY-B’s Gayle Ledbetter, are both planning on entering their chili in this year’s “Cotton Pickin’ Chili Cook-Off” to be held in downtown Altus on Saturday, Oct. 5. Both the newspaper and radio have placed in years past, and both plan on taking home a top prize this year in their division. There will be trophies and cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each division from individual to civic groups and businesses. Booths will be set up around the downtown square offering up tastes of chili, as well as some individuals serving up homemade barbecue and salsa. Tasting bowls will be available for sale so you can try as much as want. Festivities begin at 9 a.m., with chili served starting at 10 a.m. Awards will be presented at 1 p.m.
Aside from cook off events, there will also be other special attractions from a petting zoo, wagon rides and stick horse races, to a watermelon seed spitting contest. There will also be displays such as a miniature cotton gin and antique tractor and farm equipment displays, face painting, clowns, a Moon Jump and a rock wall to climb.
Along with the Altus Times and KEY-B, other sponsors are Bar-S, Livingston Machinery, Fowler Agency, Helena, Western Equipment, Momsons, Williams, The City of Altus, Cotton Grower’s Cooperative, Stockman’s Bank, Jackson County Memorial Hospital, Wilmes Superstore and KWHW radio.
