Red River Ford, the Bryan County United Way and several local businesses have joined forces for the Red River Ford United Way Food Drive again.

This is the sixth year the event has been held. Last year the drive collected 43,497 pounds of food and $5,131 for local food banks.

The drive will supply food and resources to four local food banks this year. Food banks receiving aid are St. Catherine’s Food Bank, Hands of Hope Food Bank, Families Feeding Families and the Salvation Army.

Red River Ford Co-owner Derrell Mendez said that given the record numbers last year, this year’s goal is to simply raise as much as possible.

“It’s not just Red River Ford either,” said Mendez, commenting “it’s all about the team work.” He said several businesses in the area participate each year.

Featured businesses will be SORTS from October 21 to 25, Bryan County from October 28 to November 1, Alorica from November 11 to 15 and Cardinal Glass from November 18 to 22.

Southeastern Electric Co-op was the first featured business from October 14 to 18. Mendez said citizens can donate at any of these locations or any other business with a food drive box.

Red River Ford is also offering other ways to donate to the cause. Every year during the drive the dealership donates $25 for every new or pre-owned car sold.

This year a Driving for Food ride and drive event will also take place On November 2. During the event a course will be set up for people to test drives cars at the dealership. For every car test driven, $20 will be donated up to $6,000.

Mendez said it feels fantastic when the numbers come in at the end of a food drive and he sees just how much the local businesses and community help each other.

For more information on donating or to request a box for your business to be involved in the drive contact Red River Ford at 924-9458 or the Bryan County United Way at 931-7147.
