More than 130 people showed up to the second annual Saint Patrick’s Day Run last weekend, running the 5K or walking a mile to support Calera projects.
Money raised goes toward the Erwin Nix Memorial Scholarship and the Public Safety Fund. The scholarship will be provided to two Calera seniors to use at any college they wish.
To win the scholarship, the students must fill out a resume and write an essay about what volunteerism means to them, according to Calera Fire Chief Brian Norton.
He said the turnout this year was much greater than last year’s race and the town hopes it will continue to grow.
“This year was huge compared to last year,” said Christian Toews after announcing the day’s winners.
The event raised over $3,200 for the two funds this year.
Representatives from Lowe’s in Durant also joined the event, setting up a table for its current charity campaign, Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Shamrocks Against Dystrophy.
Each year, Lowe’s stores request donations for the MDA to send children to camp. The Durant location’s goal this year is to fund the experience for 10 children. The store has raised enough to send seven children so far.
