An arrest has been made in connection with a body found Monday evening underneath a bridge east of Durant.
Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents arrested Raymond Jay Stewart, 26, Durant, Tuesday afternoon on a complaint of first-degree murder, OSBI spokesperson Jessica Brown said. He was arrested after being questioned at the Durant Police Department. Stewart first was taken to the hospital to be treated for a broken finger, then booked into jail.
Stewart is accused of killing a still-unidentified man and dumping his body at Canella Creek under a bridge three miles east of Durant on Old Highway 70.
Bryan County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area early Monday evening after a person dialed 911 upon seeing the body.
Brown said authorities are still working to identify the victim.
“The victim and the suspect did not know each other,” Brown said. “They met at a bar in Durant Friday night and got into an altercation.”
According to Brown, Stewart and the victim met at another location early Saturday morning where the murder occurred. Stewart then put the body in the creek area.
Stewart is being held on $2 million bond.
OSBI latent print examiners have taken fingerprints from the victim to enter into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System, according to Brown, and if the victim had ever been arrested, a match should be made and identification secured.
