A Durant man convicted of downloading child pornography from the Internet was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Shannon Lynn Hutcherson, 23, was sentenced for aggravated possession of child pornography during a sentencing hearing Thursday. Bryan County District Judge Mark Campbell suspended five years of the sentence.

Hutcherson pleaded no contest to the charge in April, and as part of the plea agreement, an additional charge of distribution of child pornography was dismissed.

He was arrested and charged in May 2013 during an investigation by Durant and Guthrie police departments.

Hutcherson is accused of possessing more than 100 separate materials depicting child pornography, court papers state, and possessing shared files from the Internet that show minors in sexual and lewd acts.

Durant Police Detective Michael Shufeldt began investigating when Lt. Mark Bruning, an investigator with the Guthrie Police Department, contacted him. Bruning is a member of the Oklahoma Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force that is sponsored by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Bruning told Shufeldt that he was conducting an undercover operation of sharing child pornography on the Internet and he determined that files depicting child pornography had been downloaded and shared from an Internet Protocol (IP) address in Durant, according to an affidavit.

Based on that information, Shufeldt obtained a search warrant May 2 for a Durant home where police seized five computers, three of which were in Hutcherson’s bedroom, the affidavit states.

Hutcherson was interviewed and, according to the affidavit, he said he was in a file-sharing network, and out of approximately 500 files in his shared folder, five to 10 percent showed adult pornography and the remainder showed adults engaged in sexual acts with children ranging in age from 1-17. Of those files, 90 percent showed a male child, the affidavit states.

Hutcherson told police that, although he attempted to “unshare” his files, other users probably downloaded them from his shared folder, the affidavit states.

According to the affidavit, Hutcherson admitted he had been downloading child pornography since he was 14 years old.
