The Choctaw Nation held a ribbon cutting ceremony last week to introduce a new food distribution center for tribal members.
Chief Gary Batton said this center is not only for Choctaws but for any CIDB card holder in the area. This is the third such center the Choctaw Nation has opened and plans for more are in the works.
“This is a supplemental food program through the SDA,” said Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Director of Food Distribution Jerry Tonubbee.
He said the nutritional program is for low income tribal families but it is not like most food banks.
“It’s like any grocery store,” said Tonubbee. He said one exception is that all the goods at the center are nutritional.
Tonubbee said prior to this center, tribal members received goods from a warehouse where they would have to take whatever was given to them and from the back of trucks before that.
While customers still have certain items they can choose from they now have the option to pick which of those items they want.
Tonubbee said this will reduce goods that would be wasted. The store is also equipped with a kitchen so customers can learn how to prepare healthy meal options for their families.
