One Durant woman is calling her dog a hero after waking the woman up to a fire in her house.

Lisa Burns said her seven-month-old dog Xena woke her up early Monday morning and led her to a small fire in her house.

“It was out of character for her,” said Burns. She said the dog would normally lie by her side until she woke up, but that morning, Xena wasn’t waiting for Burns to wake.

She began jumping on her owner to wake her up an hour before the alarm went off. Burns said when she woke up, she could hear an electrical hum and knew something was wrong.

Then dog then lead her to a small fire which Burns was able to easily extinguish. Burns said she fears what may have happened if Xena had not woke her up.

“It could have been a lot worse,” she said. “It would have been really going good before I would have known it.”

Burns said she is glad her story had a happy ending rather than a disastrous one.
