A 22-year-old Blue man who is a suspect in a Sunday murder has been arrested, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
Mark Anthony Neal was booked into jail for suspicion of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Frank Wendell Owens II, 22, Bennington, who was found Sunday evening on Old Highway 70 near the Blue River Bridge, according to authorities. He was taken to the Medical Center of Southeastern Oklahoma in Durant where he died.
Neal was taken into custody Monday after a search and series of interviews, according to OSBI spokesperson Gary Perkinson.
The victim’s pickup was discovered burning at approximately 2:15 a.m. Monday east of Blue River on Highway 70.
When Durant firefighters arrived on the scene, the Philadelphia Volunteer Fire Department had put out most of the fire before running out of water, according to a Durant Fire Department report.
Durant firefighters then extinguished the remainder of the fire. The vehicle was a total loss.
Bryan County Sheriff Ken Golden said the sheriff’s office is working with OSBI and the U.S. Marshals on this investigation and that the death is being treated as a homicide.
Officers worked through the night Sunday and all day Monday to identify and apprehend the suspect.
Officers are still working to determine a motive for the shooting.
Perkinson said he believes more details on the circumstances surrounding the event will emerge today as the investigation continues.
Neal is currently being held in the Bryan County Jail. The Bryan County District Attorney’s Office will be reviewing the reports to determine charges.
