A local teen will soon be coming home after a swimming accident landed him in the hospital for two months, and the family needs help getting ready.
Grant Rustin is a 16-year-old student at Victory Life Academy in Durant who broke his neck at the start of the summer in a swimming accident.
Rustin has been in physical rehab in a Denver, Colorado, hospital for the past two months, according to his older sister Brianna Baughman.
Baughman hosted a garage sale Saturday at the First Nazarene Church in Durant to raise funds to prepare for her brother’s return.
“He comes home August twenty-first,” said Baughman.
She said her brother is in a wheelchair and the house had to undergo some renovations to accommodate.
“We took out a wall that was dividing two rooms and made it one large bedroom and in Grant’s bathroom, we’ve put in a new shower and vanity and different things to make it easier to access,” said Baughman.
Baughman said they still have work to do on the house and the money raised will go toward those expenses. Rustin lives in the house with his parents and younger brother.
She said a family friend also hosted a golf tournament recently to help with the expenses.
Although Baughman didn’t know exactly how much was raised by the tournament, she said it went well with approximately 90 golfers participating.
Baughman said her family would like to thank everyone who has given to the family and supported them during this difficult time.
