Durant has notoriety as the home of the “World’s Largest Peanut.”
When Coors Beer distributor and city leader Olen Miller donated the aluminum for peanut, it was the largest.
Now, there are several peanuts larger in the world, some promoted as such, while others are not.
In the 1970s, Seguin, Texas had the “World’s Largest Pecan.”
Miller decided Durant needed something similar and the idea eventually became reality complete with a time capsule buried beside the peanut.
Marilyn Hitchcock, Miller’s daughter said, “He had the peanut made. He also made signs to put around the city that read: “Durant, Oklahoma. Home of the World’s Largest Peanut…and other nuts.”
“Those signs were taken by college students and different people and taken back to their home towns,” she said.
The novelty of Durant being home to the world’s largest peanut lives on.
Recently, Janet and Terry Yarbrough came upon the peanut by accident while driving around.
They then decided they had to have their photo in front of it, especially if it’s one of the world’s largest!
They drove in from Corpus Christi and discovered the nut in front of Durant City Hall.
Janet said, “We are on vacation and are staying here overnight on our way to Oklahoma City. We had to have a picture with the peanut.”
Now, the internet promotes Durant’s peanut, so it’s easy to find several a day having their photo made in front of City Hall.
Seems as though they couldn’t keep those peanut signs out on the road years ago, so the whole sign thing became a memory.
Hitchcock said, “That’s why they all disappeared, and you won’t believe how many are all over the country.”
