The Phyllis Jones Rustin Endowed Scholarship has been established through the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Foundation.
The scholarship is available to benefit deserving students seeking a degree in English at Southeastern. Preference will be given to students majoring in English Education.
Rustin earned a bachelor of arts in Speech Communication with minors in English and Education from Southern Nazarene/Southeastern in 1974. She received her-master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from Southeastern in 1986.
Her professional experience includes 23 years as a classroom teacher at Durant High School, 1989-2012; also, Antlers Junior High School, 1975-76; Hugo Junior High School, 1976-77; and Indian Tutor for Hugo Public Schools, 1977-80.
Rustin has taught English II Pre-Advanced Placement, English I, English I Honors and English I Pre-AP, journalism and creative writing, Speech I, and language arts for seventh and eighth grades.
For the last two summers, she has taught English workshops for Southeastern’s Upward Bound program.
Rustin has earned awards for writing and poetry, attended and presented various workshops, and has been involved with numerous educational organizations.
“This University means so much to our family and to our community,” she said. “The drama, music and art departments are bright lights in Durant and in southeastern Oklahoma.”
