World-renowned entertainer Barry Manilow brings his stage show to Choctaw’s Grand Theater tonight.
His agents made a surprise call to Durant Middle School this week to invite the Durant Middle School Choir to sing, dance and be his special guests at his show.
They had in mind to use Durant High School Choir but cooperation and a sense of fairness between directors has DMS performing.
Aprill Raines, Director of DMS Choir said, “They talked about us and the high school doing this together, but we decided that the high school kids performed at Foreigner, so we’d perform with Barry.”
Raines didn’t even have a full week to get her students ready for the performance, but she has confidence in her students.
Raines said,“They called me Monday and we are singing 3 songs. I have a small select ensemble at the Middle School that has auditioned as a show choir. They are called “Appawse” like applause but we use it because of the Lion paws. We came up with this cute little name”
Raines said her group stays busy performing and she’s glad they can do the show with Manilow.
Raines said, “We perform out in the community all the time. We did Three Valley Museum’s open house at Christmas. We caroled downtown. We did Santa on the Square event. We performed for the Teacher’s Education Sorority in town. We just performed at Branson on the Branson Belle. They did a broadway review there. Then I get this call Monday to do the Barry Manilow finale during his concert.”
They have a choreographer they sent to rehearse with the students.
Raines said, “They will have a rehearsal, then a staging rehearsal. Then we perform the concert with our 26 students, 7th and 8th graders.”
They will be at the venue 4 hours early in preparation for the performance.
According to Raines, they will perform I write the songs, Copacabana, and they finish with It’s a miracle.
Appawse members, under the direction of Aprill Raines: Addyson Gaillardet, Aidan Isenberg, Alexis Hawkins, Anna Hood-Reid, Azure Ammons-Coxsey, Camdon Cooper, Carla Becerra, Chloe Cagle, Cora Gordon, Dawson Bowman, Emily Farr, Emma Shelton, Georgia Jones, Heaven Kennedy, Ivey Johnston, James Airington, Jaselyn Biggs, Jaxon Burwick, Jayden Manous, Kenzie Singleton, Lauren Sherrer, Maci Lawson, Maci Stout, Malori Lawson, Mazie Bell, Sidney Paris, and Taylor Piearcy.
Every performance is special, but this performance should be a memory the students will cherish a lifetime.
