For its 80th anniversary, Robert E. Lee Elementary transitioned into the Robert E. Lee Early Childhood Center and stands ready to welcome the youngest students in the Durant School District.
To prepare for these students, REL underwent renovations this summer to provide a developmentally appropriate, nurturing environment for its young pupils.
Two new indoor playground areas, Lion Lane and Cub Court, were created. In Lion Lane, students enter an imaginative land where they become the “adults” in a kid-sized atmosphere featuring buildings and offices you can find on any Main Street.
More active play is encouraged in Cub Court, where students can experience learning games through an interactive digital play area, climb and slide on the play tower, or stretch their own thinking through giant building blocks.
In addition to these new play centers, students are also enjoying new outdoor playground equipment and curriculum uniquely designed for their age.
Together, these changes will make the first year of school an unforgettable, successful experience for Pre-Kindergarten students. “The project of converting Robert E. Lee Elementary School into Robert E. Lee Early Childhood Center is a true example of a school district and a community coming together. This project has exemplified our motto of ‘One Team, One Family’ from start to finish. There have been many hours of preparation put into this project spanning from teachers and administrators to our transportation and facilities departments. We are deeply appreciative of the many partners in our school family and our Durant community who have joined together to deliver this unprecedented investment in our children,” said Duane Merideth, Durant Superintendent of Schools. Durant Public Schools would like to especially thank the following invaluable community partners: Big 5 Community Services, First United Bank, Kopper Kettle owners Tammy Cross and Brenda Shipman, Dr. Pepper, Dr. Kinion Whittington, Jones PowerSports, and Sodexo. This Sunday, September 17th, community members will have their first opportunity to explore the updated facility at Robert E. Lee Early Childhood Center’s Community Open House. The event will be held from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. with ribbon cuttings to begin at 2:30 p.m. Parking is available courtesy of Calvary Baptist Church. Everyone is encouraged and invited to attend the Sunday open house.
