The First United Methodist Church of Durant and its Missions Committee provided lunch to an estimated 180 Durant Independent School District teachers and staff on back-to-school eve.

Wednesday’s event was the church’s 18th annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon.

“We have a wonderful group of teachers and support staff in Durant,” said coordinator Arnold Walker (a former educator himself who noted he taught the late Billie Letts at SOSU when she was pursuing her master’s degree). “Let’s hope we continue to give them the support they richly deserve.”

Volunteers of all ages were on hand to ensure two long tables offering a variety of foods were kept stocked, cups were filled and empty plates were taken out of the way. A few young men even moved around tables to accommodate the crowd around 11:30 a.m.

The church could have quite a bit more room for hosting next year, moving from the current building on North Third Avenue to a new one along Highway 70 West.
