Durant Schools Superintendent Duane Merideth said the school year is off to a good start with high spirits attendance up from last year.


“It’s been a great start,” said Merideth.


He said he estimates around 35 to 50 more students in the district this year but no official count is available yet.


The board reorganized personnel throughout the district during the first board meeting of the new school year.


Mindy Campbell will now serve as a first-grade teacher at Robert E. Lee.


Cory Lowry is to be employed as the ninth-grade academic advisor at Durant High School. This position was created with the resignation of Sara Carpenter.


Carol Benson will be a counselor at Durant High School. This position was created with the resignation of Lucretia Decker.


Jodi McWilliams will be the Cheer Coach Instructor at Durant High School. This position was created with the resignation of Lou Ann Lively. Jeff Bradford be employed as a P.E./ Athletic Instructor.


Leslie Thomas will be the Art Teacher at Durant Intermediate School. This position was created by the resignation of Donna Seay.


Jessica Mitchell is now a fifth-grade social studies teacher at Durant Intermediate School. This job was created by Brittney Preston’s new employment in the district.


Adrienne Hanson will be employed as a fourth-grade teacher at Durant Intermediate School. This position was created by Mellissa Sherrer’s new employment in the district.


Misty Cedillo will be employed as second-grade teacher at Robert E. Lee Elementary. This position was created due to Adrienne Hanson transferring to Durant Intermediate School.


Shaunda Usry be employed as first grade teacher at Robert E. Lee Elementary. This position was created by the resignation of Mindy Campbell.


Kristin Burkett will now be employed as a kindergarten teacher at Washington Irving Elementary. This position was created with Brooke Dinsmore transferring to Northwest Heights Elementary.


Jennifer Wagoner will be employed as first-grade teacher at Washington Irving Elementary, one year temporary position created with Lydia Daniels transferring to third grade.


Several support personnel such as teaching assistants were moved throughout the district as well.


Merideth also made note of the recent accomplishment by Durant High School Band Director Chris Gregg as he was named the 2014 Band Director of the year by the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.
