Formal charges were filed Tuesday against a man Calera Police said robbed a pharmacy and led the police chief on a high-speed chase.
Bobby Gene Brewer II, 42, Durant, was charged with first-degree robbery and endangering others while eluding police.
Calera Police Chief Don Hyde said Brewer admitted to robbing One Stop Pharmacy in Calera early Monday afternoon. According to an affidavit. Hyde saw the suspect vehicle, a blue van, turn onto Platter Road and he attempted a traffic stop because the driver did not use a turn signal.
A chase began until Brewer drove the van off the roadway at a 90-degree curve and then struck several trees before it stopped leaning slightly on the driver side.
Brewer exited the vehicle and was taken into custody, according to an affidavit, and a short time after that, the van caught fire.
The affidavit states Brewer admitted to using a BB gun, which he later threw out the van window, to rob the store of medications. A store clerk said a man came in, pointed the gun and demanded Xanax and Oxycontin pills.
A liquor store on North 10th Avenue off Main Street in Durant was robbed earlier that day, and Durant Police said Brewer is a suspect in that robbery.
