The Durant Fire Department has put out several grass and rubbish fires.

Firefighters went at 7:59 p.m. Monday to West Georgia Street and South Second Avenue after someone called to report possible illegal burning.

When firefighters arrived five minutes later, they found a large pile of household rubbish on fire. They put out the fire and then told the occupant a permit was required for burning.

Firefighters were dispatched at 5:55 p.m. Sunday to Cale Switch and Orchard roads where they put out a fire.

On Aug. 21, firefighters responded at 6:14 p.m. to a grass fire at North Sawmill and Shields roads. That fire burned five acres and started from a rubbish fire a few days earlier after wind blew embers into the field, according to a fire department report.
