Hunger advocates will once again be joining the fight against hunger in Oklahoma by participating in Hunger Action Month. This month-long national campaign works to fight hunger and is sponsored by Feeding America in partnership with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
“The Regional Food Bank simply would not exist without support from the community,”Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank, said, in a news release. “We are grateful that our donors, volunteers, agencies and advocates support the fight against hunger in Oklahoma year round, but especially during Hunger Action Month.”
With distributions in 53 central and western Oklahoma counties, the Regional Food Bank depends on local community partners to get food to Oklahomans struggling with hunger. In Bryan County, the Regional Food Bank partners with eight agencies to fight hunger. Partner agencies include: Victory Life Church Food Bank, Youth Services of Bryan County, Southern Oklahoms Nutrition Project – Durant, St. Catherine’s House, Families Feeding Families, First Baptist Church – Colbert, Southern Oklahoma Nutrition Project - Bokchito and Colbert Senior Citizens.
Together, we can solve hunger. Some of the events taking place in the Oklahoma in support of Hunger Action Month include:
· Hunger Action Day - Wear orange, the color of hunger, to support hunger awareness on Thursday, September 4th.
· Double your donation to Food for Kids this month. Four generous donors, including Top of the World and three caring, local families, have offered to match every dollar donated – up to $100,000 – to help provide weekend food for chronically hungry children through the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food for Kids Program. To make a tax-deductible donation to Food for Kids, or for more information about the program, visit regionalfoodbank.org or call Vinita Musapeta at 405.600.3136.
· Participate in the Students Against Hunger Food Drive. Students CAN fight hunger! This food and fund drive runs from September 29th through November 7th. All food donations raised through this drive stay local. For more information, or to sign up your school, contact Clifton Roberts at email@example.com or 405.600.3132.
Download the Regional Food Bank’s “30 Ways in 30 Days” calendar. It is full of ways in which every Oklahoman can take that first step toward helping fight hunger every day of the month.
