Whenever two Eagles tangle, the feathers will fly.
That was the case on Friday in a grudge match between the Eagles of Achille and the Eagles of Victory Life Academy, with Achille grinding out an 11-5 win.
Mike Reese went five and one-third innings on the mound to get the win, with Tanner McDonald coming on to close the game. Kevin Covington, VLA’s lone senior, got the start in the Victory Life senior night game.
Achille improved to 11-9 on the season with the win with Coach Mike Parsons crediting the defense and timely hitting.
“Our pitching was pretty good and it kept us in there,” Parsons said. “Tanner came in and did a good job in relief to help us out. We scattered hits around, so that was good.”
Cooper Turner made a highlight-reel play in center for Achille, which was answered by VLA outfielder Zach Hestily in the later innings.
But Achille posted four runs in the second and sixth innings to keep Victory Life hitters on their heels. Reese (a double) and David Beydler (2-for-2 at bat) were big parts of the Achille hit parade, Parsons said.
Meanwhile, the home Eagles from VLA scored a run in the first inning and scored one each from the third through sixth frames.Conner Harrison’s fourth-inning double and RBIs from Grant Rustin and Ben Grody kept VLA in the game.
On defense, Chandler Stampley was involved in both double plays recorded by VLA. Meanwhile, Covington was involved in a home-plate collision which resulted in the ejection of an Achille player.
