ALTON — The Madison County Coroner issued a release Monday regarding the death of a Godfrey man in a car accident in the Alton Farm and Home Supply Store parking lot Sunday.

Joseph Michael Welch, Jr., of Godfrey, suffered a fatal heart attack while driving his 2010 Ford Focus across the supply store’s parking lot, according to Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn. Welch’s vehicle struck a tree, and Alton police and fire personnel were called to the scene at approximately 3:12 p.m. The responders administered advanced life support to Welch at the scene before he was transported to Alton Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Welch was 61 years old.

Welch received only superficial lacerations, according to Nonn’s report, and X-rays failed to reveal any significant trauma. It was also determined through interviews that Welch had a history of significant and major cardiac disease with a reported episode of dizziness on Saturday that was attributed to the heat, according to Nonn. At this time, his death is attributed to natural causes, but as he was operating a motor vehicle at the time of the incident, routine toxicology testing for the presence of alcohol and drugs will be performed.

Funeral arrangements are pending at this time, but are under the direction of Wallace-Carroll Funeral Home in Herrick, Ill.
