Altus Police have arrested a Vernon, Texas man in connection with at least a dozen auto burglaries over the past several weeks.

Tony Baker, 37, was arrested after patrol officers located the suspect’s vehicle, a white Chevrolet 4-door pickup with Texas tags, at the Altus Wal-Mart.

Shortly after 10 p.m. on Wednesday, police were called to investigate two different auto burglaries at the Altus City Auditorim. Windows were broken and ladies purses were taken in those cases. In the early morning hours, police were called to the 1900 block of East Broadway. Again, windows were broken and property taken from those vehicles.

Property from the earlier auto burglaries was found in the suspect’s vehicle. He later confessed to investigators to commiting many auto burglaries in Altus over the past several weeks. Baker’s children, ages 11 and 13, were also in the vehicle when it was located. They were not charged and were later released to a grandparent.

“I’m proud of every officer involved in this arrest,” said Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy, “From the detectives, who gathered intelligence from other law enforcement agencies in Wichita Falls and Vernon, on the suspect and the suspects vehicle, to the patrol who remained vigilant in the search for the vehicle - their efforts were outstanding.”

Baker was taken to the Jackson County Jail on complaints of Burglary to an Auto. Additional charges are expected, which include unlawful use of credit or debit card.
