A Durant police officer involved in an off-duty crash has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
The misdemeanor DUI charge was filed against Brandon S. Carbaugh, 36, Achille on Friday.
He is accused of being under the influence of alcohol when he crashed his truck at approximately midnight on Oct. 15 on Highway 91 two miles east of Chickasaw Road and two miles west of Achille.
According to a report by Trooper B.J. Keeling, Carbaugh was driving a Ford pickup westbound when the truck traveled to the right of the roadway. Carbaugh then overcorrected and the pickup went off the roadway to the left and rolled one-and-one quarter times. The report stated that Carbaugh was not wearing a seat belt.
Carbaugh had arm and leg injuries, and he requested treatment, according to the patrol, so he was taken to the Medical Center of Southeastern Oklahoma where he was admitted for observation and later released.
The report stated that driving under the influence was the cause of the crash. The charge was filed once tests revealed Carbaugh was intoxicated. He was not jailed at the time due to him being taken to the hospital.
If he had been arrested, he would have been taken to an out-of-county jail for safety reasons, which is standard procedure.
Carbaugh was placed on paid, administrative leave after the crash. Durant Police Chief Durward Cook said late Friday afternoon that Carbaugh is still on leave and is also the subject of an internal investigation.
“We’re not going to make a decision (on Carbaugh’s employment) until we know all of the facts,” Cook said.
Carbaugh has not been arrested. The Bryan County District Attorney’s Office mailed a letter dated Friday to his Achille address informing him of the charge and ordering him to appear in court during arraignments within 10 days of the date of the letter.
If he does not appear within 10 days, a warrant will be issued for his arrest.
Carbaugh, who has worked for the police department twice, was recognized for five years of service during a Durant City Council meeting in early October, prior to the accident.
