A Cartwright woman accused of dumping a box of puppies in Calera has been charged with abandonment of domestic animals on a road.

Gail E. Gauthier, 66, was charged Wednesday. According to court papers, on Oct. 11, she left several puppies at the Jack Stockton building on Donnell Drive in Calera. The incident was captured on a video camera and it was subsequently posted on Facebook. The video shows a woman dumping the box of puppies and then driving away.

According to Calera Police, she called and agreed to be interviewed several days later. The puppies were put up for adoption.

Abandoning an animal is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of $500 and/or one year in jail.

Gauthier was sent a letter advising her to appear in court within 10 days or a warrant would be issued for her arrest.
