Texoma Arts Association (TAA) announces that artist Marcelene J. Jackson has been selected as Featured Artist of the Month of December by the Texoma Arts Association. The public is invited to a “Meet the Artist Reception” December 5th, from 4 PM to 7 PM at Second Street Salon, located at 211 N. Second Ave, Durant. The opening reception coincides with Durant’s First Thursday Art Walk.

The artist will be available to show and discuss her work during the reception. Her paintings, note cards and prints will continue to be on exhibit December 5-27, 2013 and the public is invited to stop by the salon to view her works of art any time during the regular business hours of the Second Street Salon (shown below).

Jackson was a member of the Southern Colorado Watercolor Society and Iowa Artist and is now a member of Texoma Arts Association. An award winning artist, she has received recognition and awards in the states of Texas, Colorado, Montana and Iowa. She is particularly proud of two awards she received for watercolor paintings entitled “Above the Glaciers” and “Big John, Little John”.

She has also received commissions from individuals and private parties for house and building portraits in Virginia, Maine, Cape Cod, Iowa, Canada, Oklahoma, Washington DC and Texas. She had a gallery in Denison in the early 2000s and after moving to Colorado was represented with the former ArtPlace Gallery in Denison, TX. Many of her paintings have been commissioned and are in private collections throughout the US.

From early childhood, Jackson had an interest in art however, it was later in life before she devoted more time to art. Her parent’s morals were always an inspiration to her with the way they taught her to recognize and appreciate the importance of certain things in life.

Her daughter was the most influential and encouraging person in her quest to become an accomplished artist. She took the opportunity to refine her abilities to draw and paint, mostly studying on her own but, when time allowed, in art classes and workshops at colleges, art schools and other artists. Born in Paris, Texas, Jackson moved to Dallas when she was a young adult. She enrolled at Draughons Business College and later continued her education in Business Administration at Southern Methodist University.

After 31 years as a Manager in Distribution for a major Pharmaceutical Company, she began experimenting with watercolors and learned to enjoy the unpredictability of the medium. She continues to draw and paint with pen and ink, colored pencil, and acrylic, but watercolor has become and remains her favorite painting medium because she finds it the most exciting material to manipulate.

When she and her family bought a lake house she discovered a love for painting outdoors, enjoying the challenge of catching nature as it changed, attempting to tell the story before the scene disappeared.

Jackson seeks to capture the emotions of the moment in her paintings, be it life or nature, and hopes to influence the viewer in a peaceful and positive way. She said that she feels that God is in control and that he will continue to direct her to places of inspiration.
