Durant was selected as one of three locations for the 2014 Oklahoma Republican Party senatorial debates. Hosted and sponsored by the OKGOP, the debates will create an open forum for candidates to express opinions on major issues.
“I am excited to have big-name candidates coming, showing that rural conservatives really matter, and our beliefs will be communicated both at the state Capitol and in Washington,” said Holly Gerard, vice chair of the Bryan County Republicans and Conservatives Club.
The Durant debate will be 7-8:30 p.m. June 4 in the Southeastern Oklahoma State University ballroom, moderated by Jerry Buchanan.
“We are so proud as a local party to be given the opportunity to help highlight our community and our fine university to our Senate candidates and guests from across the state,” Gerard said.
The debates are intended to help voters decide for whom to cast their ballots in the June 24 primary.
“This is obviously one of the top races in the 2014 election cycle, and voters are watching very closely,” said OKGOP chairman Dave Weston. “Our goal here is to provide Republican voters with an opportunity to see and hear from their candidates. We fully expect one of these men will be representing all of Oklahoma in the U.S. Senate at the end of Dr. [Tom] Coburn’s term. With less than 30 days until the election, we expect this to be a very lively and informative event.”
