Lady Lions fall to McAlester in extra inning affair
by By Zach Maxwell Sports Reporter
An extra-inning loss to district rival McAlester on Tuesday drops the Durant Lady Lions’ fast-pitch record to 4-6.
But the hard-hitting team will have a quick chance to bounce back with four games between now and Saturday.
Hurler Sidney Hampton took the nine-inning loss while McAlester’s Cheyenne Selman notched the long win with seven strikeouts. The difference came in stranded runners, as the Lady Lions left more than a dozen runners on base.
“We left the bases loaded twice, and two in scoring position twice,” said Durant Softball Coach Aaron Mullens. “But they came back nice, and that’s a positive. We’ve got to pick ourselves up, we’re still looking for a team leader.”
The game was full of drama. Durant took a 2-1 lead into the third when the Lady Buffaloes scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead. Hampton retired nine of the next 10 McAlester hitters before a furious Durant rally got the lead back in the sixth.
Selman got two quick out before hitting Durant’s Destinee Lewis. Macy Powell actually struck out on a pitch that got away from McAlester’s catcher, setting up the “three-out” comeback.
Lewis scored on a subsequent error by McAlester, and Powell reached second. Kylie Manning walked, then Breanna Simmons hit a single to score Powell and make it 5-4 in favor of Mac.
Riley Andis then supplied a two-RBI double to get the lead back as pinch runner Sarah Roesler and Simmons each scored.
The Lady Buffs scored two in the seventh to go back up 7-6. Hampton responded in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off single, eventually scoring on a two-out hit by Powell. Her hit floated along the third base line and was bobbled by Selman and kicked well into foul ground, allowing Hampton to tie the game.
The Lady Buffs got a one-out single before Powell provided more heroics with an unassisted double play on a live drive to second. But the Lady Lions could not get on base, forcing a ninth inning.
McAlester tallied four singles and a hit batter in the top of ninth to take a 9-7 lead. The Lady Lions went three-up-three-down in the bottom half to end the game.
Hampton went 2-5 with an RBI; Kylie Hobbs was 2-6 with a double, RBI and a sacrifice; Alexa Richards went 2-5; Beanna Simmons went 2-5 with an RBI and scored twice; Andis had the two-RBI double; Lewis scored a run; Kylie Manning singled, walked twice and scored a run.
Durant has drawn Coweta on Thursday in the Shawnee Tournament at 5:30 p.m. On Friday, the Lady Lions will see Pryor at 1:45 p.m. and play Deer Creek at 4:15 p.m. They play on Saturday against Claremore at 3:15 p.m.
So far, Durant has defeated Dickson, Guthrie (twice), and Colbert. They have lost to Carl Albert twice, Shawnee, Moore, Southmoore and now McAlester.
