COLBERT - The Leopards took a step closer to baseball glory on Friday with a 5-1 win over Vanoss. Colbert’s season record improves to 17-8 with the victory.

Colbert hitters pounded out 10 singles and took advantage of the Wolves’ mistakes to grind out the win. The game was tied 1-1 until a four-run fifth inning favored the Leopards.

“We’ve struggled to score runs at times but we’re learning to manufacture runs,” said Colbert baseball Coach Lance Britt. “Our pitching and defense has been steady, which has helped us as we played a pretty tough schedule.”

Most of the Leopards’ losses have been against top-three teams including Silo, Byng, Asher and Red Oak. The 11th-ranked Colbert team will play a struggling Soper team on Monday before traveling to Turner for their district playoff on Thursday.

The talented Leopard rotation includes lefty Kason Krob, Chris Roberts, Tanner Lyday and Friday’s tandem of James hair and Peyton Whitehead.

Hair struggled to find the plate on Friday, loading the bases in the third before Whitehead was brought in to relieve him. Whitehead struck out seven Wolves in five innings of shut-out pitching.

Colbert offensive stats: Dylan Jones had a single, a run and an RBI; James Hair had a base hit and a walk; Chris Roberts had three singles; Whitehead was credited with a sacrifice bunt; Ethan Williams had a single, a stolen base and scored a run; Colton Bruce had an infield hit and scored; Keller Cummins collected two base hits and a run; Tanner Lyday got an RBI’ Kason Krob walked once and scored a run.
