COLBERT - Bring out the hardware.
The Lady Leopards collected the first of what they hope to be a full set of trophies, sweeping district rival Calera in two games Thursday by scores of 12-1 and 14-1.
Both games went the full seven innings, as the LadyDawgs held their own in the early going before the Colbert bats awoke.
Colbert senior Breawna McCraw struck out 18 Calera hitters - nine in each complete game she pitched. She also scored three runs over the two games and went 4-for-5 in the championship game with four runs batted in.
“I step on the field with confidence and try to be the leader of the team,” McCraw said after the emphatic victories. “I’m very proud of my teammates and I look forward to playing with them each day.”
Game one heroes for Colbert included seniors Samantha Cummins (two RBI double) and Hannah Guajardo (double, run scored). Also contributing were Kylie Stubbs (base hit, RBI, run), Arie Young (single and triple, two runs) and Makayla Pierce (a sacrifice squeeze which scored McCraw).
In game two, the whole line-up erupted behind lead-off hitter McCraw. Young had a base hit, RBI and scored a run; Pierce had two doubles and an RBI; Guajardo (2-5) scored twice; Stubbs (3-4) scored three runs; Cummins (2-4) collected three RBIs.
Haylie McGowan had a pair of doubles and three RBIs; Kylie Rice had an RBI and scored a run; nine-hole hitter Jordan Weger (2-4) had a double, single and scored twice.
Calera took an early 1-0 lead in the second when Ashlynn Cooper hit a lead-off double and was brought home by Madison Partain. Colbert tied the game 1-1 in the third but pit up five runs in the fourth to build some distance.
“It took us awhile to get going, but we hit well and turned it on,” said Colbert softball Coach Damon Lewis. “It was a good effort all the way around. But it’s going to get tougher, because there are a lot of good teams in this area.”
Regional playoff brackets will be announced by OSSAA later this weekend or early next week.
