Bulldogs win in two OTs
CHICKASHA - Sophomore Gabe Barton kicked a 20-yard field goal in the second overtime to give the Altus High Bulldogs a 32-29 victory over the Chickasha Chicks on Friday night.
It also ended a wild night of football that led to that bizarre ending.
Altus and Chickasha fought to a 21-21 tie at the end of regulation.
Junior running back T.J. McGill scored twice in the first overtime, once on a 7-yard touchdown run, and again on the two point conversion where he literally carried several Chickasha defenders into the end zone. That gave Altus a 29-21 lead.
But Chicks quarterback Cade Morris did the same thing scoring on a run and the conversion points in Chickasha’s offensive possession.
That’s when the fun started for him.
Hunter Harris, normally a defensive back for the Bulldogs had been switched to linebacker during Wednesday’s practice because an injury situation that warranted it. However, AHS Coach Chad Stone probably didn’t realize that would have on the impact of the game.
On the first play of the second overtime, Harris stepped in the passing lane and picked off a Morris pass ending the Chicks possession.
In three plays the Bulldogs had the ball on the three yard line with a fourth an goal. The field goal unit for Altus went onto the field with a chance to end the game. After a timeout the team lined up but Barton’s kick was blocked. In the confusion, Altus ran the ball into the end zone which would have given the Bulldogs the victory. However an official inadvertently blew the play dead before it was actually over.
There was a long discussion between officials but inadvertent whistle by rule meant the down had to be played over. This time Barton calmly knocked through the center of the goal post and Altus got to celebrate its first win of the season.
“Had they not blown the whistle and killed the ball it would have been a touchdown,” Stone said.
“It was another big game for sophomore running back Taven Birdow who rushed 29 times for 255 yards and scored two touchdowns on runs of 61 and 20 yards
“He (Taven)refuses to go down,” Stone said. “He refuses to go down, he’s all there. He runs with reckless abandon and he has another gear when he gets tot he outside that people don’t know about. He couldn’t have made any of those runs this evening without those guys up front and without T.J. MGill. T.J.’s blocking on the linebackers was fantastic. That two point conversion was just unreal. Offensively we came out and did some good things. Defensively they broke some good runs but Wavin Yada had good night at linebacker for us.”
Bulldog notes: Chickasha had a chance to end the game on the last play but a 30 yard field goal attempt was wide left.Tanner Cross scored the other Altus touchdown on a 1 yard run. The win gives the Bulldogs a 1-3 season record with a 1-0 district mark. They host Duncan next Friday.
