On January 3-4, seven wrestlers from the Durant Youth Wrestling Program competed at the annual United States Junior Open Championship held at the OKC state fairgrounds (Cody, Colton, and Cory Hicks, Preston Lewis, Josh McKim, Cooper McCoy, and Caden Orlando). All Durant wrestlers made a strong showing, and two came away with top honors.
Josh McKim earned the championship in the division 4 novice class, and open class wrestler Cory Hicks also placed 1st in his division.
At the national tournament, Cory Hicks was also honored with the Oklahoma Super All-State award for his performance during the 2012-13 wrestling season. In order to qualify for this award, wrestlers must place at the OKWA State tournament, USJOC, the tournament series, and Tulsa Nationals all in the same wrestling season. Cory placed 1st in all but the Tulsa National tournament, where he placed 2nd. He ended the 2012-13 season with a ranking of 3rd in the nation.
2013-14 represents the first-ever wrestling season in which Durant wrestlers were able to achieve 2 championship wins at a national tournament.
