DURANT, Okla. - Southeastern will open the season in the underdog role after being picked to finish eighth in the Great American Conference according to the league’s preseason poll released on Tuesday.
The Savage Storm garnered 46 points in the poll and finished four points behind Ouachita Baptist in seventh.
SE is coming off a 23-20 season with a 15-15 record in conference play that saw the team miss the postseason for the first time since 2002, not counting the 2005 season in which no conference tournament was held.
Southeastern returns five position starters from last season, including first team all-conference performers Evan Ramsey and Chevis Springer.
Ramsey was the team’s leading hitter with a .356 average and 35 RBI which also earned him all-region recognition.
The Storm return just one pitcher from last year’s squad in Canyon Conley who made just five appearances and three starts, and will be welcoming eight new additions to the staff.
Southern Arkansas was picked to win the conference with 100 points and 10 of the 11 first placevotes, with Arkansas Tech second with 88 points and the remaining first place vote.
Southwestern Oklahoma State was third in the poll, followed by Arkansas-Monticello, Henderson State and Harding.
OBU finished seventh, followed by SE, then Northwestern Oklahoma State, Southern Nazarene and East Central.
Southeastern will open the 2014 season on Feb. 1 in Laredo, Texas for the first two games of a three-game series against Texas A&M-International. Game one of the opening-day double-0header begins at noon.
