The Pioneers of Bryan County Girls Basketball will be represented this year by the 1981-82 Bennington Lady Bears.
Coached by Ken Brannon, that team posted a 20-5 overall record, won the consolation championship in the Bryan County Tournament, logged a District tournament title and lost in the Regionals to arch-rival Bokchito by two points.
All six starters were Bryan County All-Stars and Shelly Percell, who is being inducted into the Bryan County Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday night, was an All-Conference guard.
Percell also earned All-State honors that year.
She is now in her second year as head coach of the Achille Lady Eagles.
Percell said, “Our greatest win of the season was when we beat Bokchito at home after (Bokchito administrator) Jerry Clark said, “That’ll be the day when Bennington beats Bokchito.”
The Pioneers are the young ladies who paved the way for Bryan County girls basketball as we know it today. The team will be recognized Saturday night.
Go early and visit with the Pioneers. You’ll be glad you did.
